Financial Aid

Financial Aid is available for summer semester for regularly admitted, eligible students. To determine financial aid eligibility, each student must complete the 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available at studentaid.gov

Many summer students rely on federal student loans to fund their summer studies. Students must be enrolled at least ½ time (6 credits for undergraduate students; 5 credits for graduate students) to be eligible for federal loans. All students are expected to complete the enrollment level for which their financial aid is disbursed. Consult the Office of Financial Aid before you change your enrollment once your summer aid is disbursed. Most aid is disbursed no sooner than 10 days before the first day of your first summer class. However, federal Pell Grants, federal Opportunity Grants, and federal Nursing loans will not be disbursed until July 1.

Undergraduate students who have filed an official 2024-25 FAFSA, and who are enrolled in 6 or more credits will be emailed (to their UP email), a Summer Loan Intent Form that they will need to complete in order to request to have federal loans included in their financial aid package for summer semester. If eligible, federal grant aid for the summer term will automatically be offered, regardless of whether a student requests to have federal loans included in their summer financial aid package.

Graduate students who have filed an official 2024-25 FAFSA, and who are enrolled in 5 or more credits, will have summer federal loan offers automatically included in their summer financial aid packages, which they can accept or decline.

Federal regulations may require a recalculation of federal aid eligibility if a student withdraws from, drops, or does not begin scheduled coursework that is offered in a modular format. Modular courses are those that do not span the length of the payment period or period of enrollment, such as summer session I and summer session II.

Students who enroll in both summer session I and summer session II classes, who withdraw from summer session I coursework before completing all of the scheduled days in the session, must notify the Office of Financial Aid to provide active confirmation of their intent to attend summer session II, even if the student remains enrolled in summer session II, to avoid a potential recalculation of their financial aid. Please see the complete Return to Title IV Aid policy in the Financial Aid Handbook.

Students who wish to withdraw from all courses prior to the end of a semester should obtain a request form from the Associate Dean of their College/School. The withdrawal process requires approval from various offices before it is complete. Please also see the tuition refund policy in the Refunds section of this bulletin.
