Withdrawal/Refund Policies
Federal and state regulations or institutional policies may require a recalculation of financial aid eligibility if a student withdraws from, drops, or does not begin all scheduled coursework each semester.

Return to Title IV Aid Policy (34 CFR 668.22)
Federal financial aid regulations may require University of Portland to return a portion of your federal or state aid to their source (pertains to both official withdrawals and unofficial withdrawals). The Office of Financial Aid will calculate the amount of financial aid to return based on the percentage of the payment period for the term you attended, and will reduce your financial aid, as required.
Example:
- If your enrollment period is 110 days long, and if you only attended 22 days, then 22/110 = 20% of time enrolled. 100% - 20% = 80% of the term not completed.
- If federal Title IV aid disbursed to student was $10,000 and the institutional charges were $9,000, then 80% * $10,000 = $8,000 of earned aid, and 80% of $9,000 = $7,200.
- To determine the actual amount of aid that must be returned, the amount of unearned aid is compared to the amount of unearned costs, using the same formula, with the amount to be returned by the school the lessor of the two amounts ($8,000 - $7,200 = $800).
- After the school returns the required $800, this will create a balance on the student’s student account, for which the student must make a payment arrangement with the Office of Student Accounts.
